At the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction held in Geneva, Switzerland, Sendai City shared its initiatives for creating a disaster-resilient environmental city.
This meeting, an international conference hosted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), brought together disaster risk reduction stakeholders worldwide from June 2 to 6, 2025, to advance the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the international guideline for disaster risk reduction.
Held annually since 2007, this eighth iteration adopted the theme “Cherish Every Day, Act Today for Resilience” and was conducted in a hybrid format combining an in-person venue with online participation. Over 3,000 participants from 164 countries attended.
Deputy Mayor Takahashi represented Sendai City, sharing the city's disaster prevention and environmental city initiatives with the global audience across multiple programs.
At the preparatory meeting's Multi-Stakeholder Forum, he introduced Sendai's international outreach efforts for disaster prevention utilizing the Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitment Online Platform (SFVC).
In two sessions focused on strengthening SME resilience and the SFVC, he presented Sendai's collaborative initiatives with diverse stakeholders, such as the Sendai Disaster Prevention Future Forum, to advance the Sendai Framework.
Furthermore, on the Ignite Stage, we introduced the BOSAI-TECH initiative. Together with UNDRR and the Cabinet Office, we announced to participants from various countries that the 2027 Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction will be held in Sendai City, calling for their participation.
