NIED plays the role of a national center of excellence for disaster risk reduction science and technology, considering user-oriented information products that are the research outputs based on the knowledge, experience, and needs obtained in the actual field studies of various natural disasters caused by earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and weather-related hazards.
